Every June NYC turns into one giant rainbow. June is pride month and this year, 2019, the celebrations are going to be bigger than ever as an honor to the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.
In June 1969, members of the LGBTQ stood up against police officers that came to arrest them insider Stonewall Inn, in a big riot that attracted many bystanders to action. This event led to the first ever pride parade in the USA as well as other countries around the world.
During pride month you can expect to find rainbow flags across the city, rainbow sidewalks, rainbow stairs, and even rainbow food. Bakeries and ice cream shops will have special pride editions like this rainbow magnum from last year.
The biggest and most colorful event during pride month is the NYC Pride March. And this year it’s double the celebration as NYC pride meets World Pride at the same location. The much-anticipated parade will be held on June 30th, 2019, starting at noon. The parade will start marching south on 26th Street and Fifth Avenue, will turn west on 8th Street until 7th Avenue and then will turn north to the ending point at 23rd Street. You can view the parade map here.
